Home of the Racing Partnership
The Racing Partnership brings together key groups and organisations from and around the UK Thoroughbred Horseracing and Breeding Industry.

The Partnership aims to encourage and develop supportive responses to issues and concerns that may harm the wellbeing of racing people in the Newmarket area and across the UK, and the wider communities of which they are a part. In particular but not exclusively, it aims to address issues of addiction through a framework of education, advice and support.

The Partners:
Injured Jockeys Fund
National Trainers Federation
Newmarket Trainers Federation
Racing Welfare
Substance Misuse Implementation Team
The New Astley Club
Thoroughbred Breeders' Association

  Issues affecting our community
All areas of society face problems and difficulties. Racing is no different. Industry charities and organisations have been working to further assistance to racing people.

There are many issues affecting those working in our industry:
Many staff are young and away from home. They can be vulnerable
Riding and handling thoroughbred horses carries risks. Stress can be part of the job
For those riding there is pressure to be light. Problem eating can be connected
There are high odds against becoming a jockey. Can lead to a sense of failure/despair
Workplace's can be situated in remote areas. People can feel isolated
Unique work hours can involve limited things to do in downtime. This can lead to boredom
Racing has an element of the fast life. This can involve alcohol, drug use and gambling
It can be a close knit community. People can find it hard to talk about problems openly
Emotions can be left unmanaged. This can lead to depression and substance misuse

The racing community has experienced a number of tragic deaths over recent years. A greater understanding of addictive behaviours has led to the development of supportive industry responses to these challenging issues. There are five main areas of focus:
Alcohol
Drugs
Gambling
Problem Eating
Family Support [for those affected by another’s addictive behaviour]

  A Supportive Policy

A supportive drug and alcohol policy for the UK Thoroughbred Horseracing and Breeding Industry has been drawn up after consultation between:

National Trainers Federation [NTF]
National Association of Stable Staff [NASS]
Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association [TBA]

The policy encourages the industry to recognise addiction as a treatable medical issue and not just as a disciplinary matter, and aims to support people who need help, to get help.
