All areas of society face problems and difficulties. Racing is no different. There are established charities and organisations in Newmarket and across the UK providing assistance to racing people, but there is a real need to develop this help further.

There are many issues affecting those working in our industry:
Many staff are young and away from home. They can be vulnerable
Riding and handling thoroughbred horses carries risks and danger. Stress can be part of the job
For those riding there is pressure to be light. Eating disorders can be connected
There are high odds against becoming a jockey. This can lead to a sense of failure and despair
Workplace's can be situated in remote areas. People can feel isolated
Staff can have unique work hours and limited things to do in downtime. This can lead to boredom
Racing has an element of the fast life. This can involve alcohol, drug use and gambling
It can be a very close knit community. People can find it hard to talk about problems openly
Emotions can be left unmanaged. This can lead to depression and substance misuse

The racing community has experienced a number of tragic deaths over recent years. Action continues to openly address concerns, and to make the appropriate help available. The Racing Partnership is working to encourage a greater understanding of addictive behaviours in the thoroughbred horseracing and breeding industry, with the important aim of developing supportive industry responses to these challenging issues. There are five main areas of focus:
Alcohol
Drugs
Gambling
Eating Disorders
