Community

The Racing Partnership has been working closely with local agencies and services from the wider community, including:
Newmarket Community Partnership
General Practitioners
Community Mental Health Teams
Treatment Providers
Housing Support Services
Youth Services
The Probation Service
Pub Watch Groups
Local Police

Many of the addiction and social issues experienced within the racing community are shared by the wider community, and working alongside agencies and services has been an important way for racing to invest in the welfare of the wider community it is a part of.

Through this collaboration, the Racing Partnership has been developing and supporting a range of initiatives addressing social issues, focusing on community projects and addiction support.

Safer Neighbourhoods Teams

Developments in community policing has led to the establishment of Safer Neighbourhoods Teams
.
These teams consist of key local agencies and services invited to meet regularly with community Police Officers, to assist in addressing social issues raised by local people through regular public briefings.

Newmarket Racing Partnership was invited to be a part of the Newmarket Safer Neighbourhoods Team, which has involved chairing and hosting the regular meetings at Racing Welfare’s head office. Representation, input and active support from the racing industry through this opportunity, adds to the strengthening relationships within the wider community.

Drug and Alcohol Action Teams

Drug and Alcohol Action Teams
[DAAT's] are statutory partnerships responsible for delivering drug and alcohol strategies at county level. Newmarket Racing partnership has been working directly with the Suffolk DAAT to highlight the specific and real treatment needs of Newmarket and West Suffolk. Those needs have been acknowledged by the Suffolk DAAT, and action has begun to build on much needed addiction support services in the town.

In supporting people to explore and engage in treatment and support options, the Racing Partnership is affectively providing a Tier 2 addiction support service. This service has become part of Suffolk’s Treatment System, and as an active member of the county wide forum, Newmarket Racing Partnership is working alongside other treatment providers to develop and improve addiction treatment services for all parts of the community.

West Suffolk SOS Bus

The Racing Partnership as been working with organisations from Newmarket and accross West Suffolk, to develop a community project encouraging safe and prosperous local night time economies. The West Suffolk SOS Bus project launched a service in September 2009 in Newmarket. Newmarket has a vibrant night time economy with visitors coming to enjoy the nightlife and racing. But as in communities across the UK, issues can arise that can be helped through neutral and practical assistance.

The primary purpose of the SOS Bus is to offer immediate and non-judgmental assistance to people at risk along the High Street. Providing first aid, advice and help to vulnerable people out at the weekend in Newmarket.

In 2001 the first SOS Bus project started in Norwich, after two teenagers were found dead following a night out in the city. Working with emergency services, support agencies, pubs and clubs, other UK communities, other towns and cities have developed SOS Bus projects, including Belfast, Colchester, and Newmarket.
